SEASONS OF BENGAL
Summer is the dominant season in Bengal. It begins from about the third week of April and continues upto mid June. The Bengali months Baishak and Jasta happen to be the official months of summer. It is the hottest season of the year. The sun shines very hotly and we suffer from the unbearable heat. At this time sometimes violent storms break out suddenly and cause great damage to man. In this season palatable fruits like mangoes, lichis, jackfruits, guavas, black berries etc. are available.
The rainy season extends from mid June to mid August. The Bengali months Asada and Sravana officially constitutes the rainy season in Bengal. There are frequent rains in this season and the ponds, lakes and rivers are filled up to the brim owing to heavy downpour. It is the happiest season for the farmers because they plough the land and sow seeds in this monsoon.
The Late Autumn, Hemanta follows Autumn closely. It extends from mid October to mid December. It announces the dawn of winter.
Winter comes next and it lasts till mid February from mid December (Bengali months Poush and Magh). In this season trees shed their leaves and all nature looks dull and old. Winter has, however, it’s charms. Peddy is harvested. Many fresh vegetables such as carrot, cauliflower, peas, tomatoes, cabbages etc. are available in this season. Two famous festivals– Christmas and the Saraswati Puja in which the Hindus worship Saraswati, the goddess of learning, are also celebrated in winter.
