TELEVISION AND ITS USES AND ABUSES
Television is a wonderful invention of modern century. It is a popular medium of mass-communication in modern civilization. It is invented by J.L. Baird in 1926. Television has now reached almost all the corners of the modern world. It brings the entire world at our door step. Its uses are multifarious. The world newspaper is brought home by this wonderful device. Channels’ telecasts, social, political and economic issues of the current world–such programmes, even live telecast, help of building mass opinion and consciousness. T.V. is also a great entertainer. It offers us all kinds of entertainment including songs, cinemas, sports, fashions, dramas, music and culture too are exposed to all. Television has given the world a new dimension in every sphere of our daily life. With the advent of T.V. life has become really interesting for people of all walks of life.
It has some demerits also. Sometimes it affects students. The people become lazy and do not get any encouragement to do work. It causes trauma and tension in the life of children. Too much viewing T.V. tells upon eye sight and also mental health, particularly among children and teenagers. Most of the programmes are biased. Some advertisements and cinemas are destroying the minds of the students and young. They are fallen in danger like crime, violence, vulgarity, corruption etc. This mass-media needs to re-think its policy. We use it properly so that we can say, “T.V. come, long live T.V.”
