PROBLEM OF CHILD LABOUR

“The child is the father of man.”
William Wordsworth

A child is the future of a nation. He/she is the citizen of a country. Most of the people wish he/she may be well-educated and prosperous in future life. But some people don’t want that. Some poor children are engaged in hazardous factories  or, in others to earn little money to help their families. They are deprived of education .They have no not only future in the world but also no right to live happily. They are called child labours who come from very poor families.

Child labour is a terrible problem in our modern civilization. Undoubtedly, on one hand, it is the curse of human beings but on the other side no industry or big business can be there with our labours. As the cost of labour rises day to day, every industrialist or businessman is eager to bring down his cost to keep profit. In addition, there is a problem of trade union. So, it has both the arguments.

In India the number of child labour is raising at an alarming rate. Nearly 14 years of 10 millions child labours are engaged in rural areas in non-agricultural occupations. These helpless child labours work in the midst of health hazards in tea-stalls, restaurants, brick-build mines and various big and small garages. As they are employed everywhere, they never complain, protest or demand. They do not get regular and sufficient payment and suffer from all ill-treatments, mal-nutrition, disarray and acute poverty. Moreover, the illiterate poor and thoughtless parents insist their children to earn for their families. Therefore the parents should be determined that they shall not plunge their children into the darkness of child labour which spoils the future of the children.

In the recent times, the government of India has become aware of the evils of the system of child labour. But it is impossible to do away with it an on a sudden. Abolition of the employment of the child labour must be preceded by the process of improving the economic condition of the families. Concerned proper method should be adopted so that the children are educated and sent to working places that destroy both the body and the soul of unfortunate creatures. In other words, effective abolition of child labour depends upon the improvement of the employment opportunities of the people in general. If child labour in our country is not prohibited in the true sense of the term, our country will soon be enlisted as the most degrading country in the world.
