KANYASHREE PRAKALPA
Under the prohibition of Child Marriage Act – 2006, the legal age of a girl is 18 years and a boy is 21 years for marriage. In spite of this act the early marriage of children is taking place incessantly. According to the District level survey, the state ranks 5th highest in the country when it comes to the prevalence of Child Marriage. In this regard, the department of Women Development and Social Welfare (DWSW) of West Bengal Government formulated a scheme that is called ‘Kanyashree Prakalpa’. It is a conditional cash transfer scheme with Rs. 500 a year as a scholarship to a girl belonging to families annual income within Rs. 120000. It will be given to the girls whose age is from 13 years to 18 years and studying in class viii to xii. And also a one time grant of Rs. 25000 will be given to a girl student of age 18 years above. It’s main aim is to stop child marriage. The another importance of the scheme is to encourage girls towards higher education. It will also reduce drop out specially amongst girls from poor families who are not covered by any other scholarship. Thus, if the project becomes implementing properly then it will be fruitful to our society and also our next-generation.
