Malda, January 1 : The 16th Malda Book Fair was held at the Malda College ground from 20th December to 31st December. Immense enthusiasm was noticed among the local people regarding this fair. Almost sixty thousand people visited the fair. The organizers of Malda Book Fair selected the vast Malda College ground as the venue. The fair remained open from 2 P.M. to 9 P.M. everyday. Nearly 200 stalls were arranged in ten rows. A large dias was erected for various cultural programmes and competitions like recitations, quiz, extempore speech etc. to enthuse and attract young participants and people. Reputed publishers like Ananda, Dey’s, Santra, Chaya and Parul had their stalls in the fair. Two publishing houses from Bangladesh also came to participate in this fair. The organizers of the fair also displayed a special stall on “French and the French Language”. There were three separate stalls for little magazines in the eastern corner of the fair. Books on various subjects were displayed. Books lovers were seen reading, skimming and purchasing books with a lot of enthusiasm. Juvenile books were sold like hot cakes. The organizers took safety measures also. Three fire engines were kept for emergency fire extinguishing. On the last day the Mayor of the Malda Municipality, Mr. Samar Ray, expressed his happiness at the success of the book fair. Moreover, he informed that some publication houses of international repute will come next year. He also thanked the local people and the volunteers for their co-operation.
