THE CAP SELLER AND THE MONKEYS

Once a cap seller lived in a small town. He used to sell caps in all the nearby towns and villages. One-day the cap seller was walking through the forest to a village. He was carrying a basket of colourful caps in his hands and calling loudly, “Caps, caps, caps! Five rupees caps, ten rupees caps!” As it was a very hot day, he became very tired of the sun’s beat. He decided to lay down under a tree for sometime. Putting his basket on the ground, he said to himself, “I am so tired! Let me take a small nap.” As he was extremely tired, he slept quickly.

On the tree there lived a small troop of monkeys. When the cap seller was sleeping, the monkeys came down the tree stealthily and picked up the caps and climbed back up the trees. They all wore the caps and started playing happily.

When the cap seller woke up, he was shocked to see his basket empty. He searched for his caps everywhere. To his surprise, he saw the monkeys up on the tree wearing them. He tried various ways to get his caps back. He shouted at the monkeys in the tree. The monkeys yelled back at him. This made the cap seller much more irritated. He picked up few stones from the ground and threw them at the monkeys. This time the monkeys threw the fruits they had in their hands at the cap seller. Finally, the cap seller used his common sense and realised that monkeys love to imitate. So, he used his smartness to get his caps back. He removed his own cap and threw it on the ground. Seeing this, the monkeys also repeated the same. The clever cap seller quickly collected all the caps, placed them back in his basket and went back home happily.

Moral : Wisdom helps in difficult situations. / Monkeys are imitative.
