B. Answer in detail :
1) Mention three major themes in Carl Dennis’ poem, ‘The Greenhouse Effect’. Comment on the theme of ‘Nature’s resilience’ in the poem. (3+3)
👉The three main themes in Carl Dennis’ poem ‘The Greenhouse Effect’ are environmental change due to global warming and pollution, economic degradation, and geopolitical power-shifts.
Regarding ‘nature’s resilience’, the poem suggests the opposite. It is a warning that human actions cause permanent damage. Nature does not bounce back; instead, fertile land becomes dry, crops fail, and the world faces “disaster and pain” due to rising temperatures and destroyed ecological balance. The poem stresses that humans must act now to prevent irreversible harm.
2) Comment on the theme of economic disparity in ‘The Greenhouse Effect’. What is the author’s aim in writing the poem ‘The Greenhouse Effect’? (3+3)
👉The poet Carl Dennis has drawn the imageries of economic disparity of people in the post-environmental change period with those of the present day.
(i) People will be too poor to buy cars and will go to work either on foot or in crowded trollies.
(ii) The governments will lose their tax bases so much that they will fail to maintain public houses.
The poem ‘The Greenhouse Effect’ is an environmental poem. The poet’s aim is to create awareness among people about the grim future of environmental degradation like global warming. He also wants people to remain alert and take caution against the danger of environmental issues caused by the greenhouse effect.
